What is 316 Stainless Steel

What's 316? Stainless Steel?

There are many alloys that are added on steel to enhance its desired properties. This stainless steel grade is marine called Type 316, is resistant to certain types of acidic environments.

There are several different kinds of stainless-steel 316. There are several common types, including L and F as well as N and H variations. They are all slightly different and each is used for distinct purposes. L means 316L steel has low carbon levels, below the 316.

316 and 316L Stainless Steel Common Quality

Although it is similar to Type 304 commonly found in the food industry, the Type 316 and 316L both offer better resistance to corrosion and are more robust in high temperatures. They can't be strengthened via heat treatment. They can be easily shaped and stretched.

It is not the same as the 316L version. Stainless Steel

Steel 316L has less carbon than 316. But despite having a higher carbon-content, 316L is very similar to 316 almost in every way. The cost is comparable and both are tough and resistant to corrosion, making them a good choice for stressful situations.

For projects that require a significant amount or welding may be a better choice due to the fact that 316 is more prone to welding corrosion that an 316L (corrosion of the weld). However, the 316 can be annealed in order to prevent the attenuation of welding. This is a ideal stainless steel to use in high temperatures, high corrosion applications, which is why it's so popular for marine and construction.

Both 316 and 316L is the best option. The 304 is similar to 304L however, the cost is much lower. The 304 is not as robust as the 317 and 317L, which have higher molybdenum levels and superior all-around corrosion protection.
